This past week and weekend were extra full for me. As you know both kids graduated. My daughter had a Saturday morning brunch graduation party. I had obligations before it. Immediately following, Lincoln and I headed off to Chicago. As you read this Sunday morning, we are still en route to his apartment downtown. We should get there by noon.
With all the added elements happening, I asked Monica if she would pen this week’s Instigator. She joined the team on May 3rd. She’s a gifted communicator, both speaking and writing. Thankfully she’s using all those skills to catapult me and Hawks Agency into a new era of effectiveness and impact. I’m grateful for her contributions. Take it away Monica…
The past 2 months of my life have been one big cluster of transitions! (Honestly, it’s really been the last couple years…but I’ll just focus on the latest and greatest.) Five weeks ago, I moved my kids, my lil Yorkie, and I into a new home across town. It was an expected move, but all the unexpected demands of settling in; fixes, expenses, furniture assembly, emotional surprises and unexpected blessings made for quite the adventure!
Then four weeks ago, I sold my cleaning business so I could begin working with Greg, here at Hawks Agency. Thus, my fun career transition, full of all the great information, events, names, webinars, guides, statistics, learning curves, and computer programs I could ever dream of!
Lastly two weeks ago, my elementary age children finished the school year (in person), and we began our school-to-summer transition; complete with split-parent scheduling, kids day scheduling, sporting sign-ups, summer reading lists, babysitters, trial and error(S), and emotional upheaval as only a 9 and 10 year old can deliver!
TRANSITIONS ARE THE BEST!!!
I’ve heard Greg say; “People love change! They don’t resist change, they resist feeling like a failure.” That’s one of my favorite ‘Greg-ism’s’, because it resonates so true with me!
I love change when it means improvement or progress. I loathe change when it means failure or digression. But what and who defines the meaning behind change and transition? We do, the person having to change, deciding to change, or wanting to change! We get to frame and assign meaning to every change and transition we make. (That’s true whether it’s a ‘have to’ or ‘want to’.)
Every transition I mentioned above, came with sacrifice, struggle, and fear. Yet every transition I mentioned above, also brought forward momentum, blessings, growth, and love. If I’m one hundred percent honest, my dominant thought surrounding all this life transition is “progress”!
Even if the pains out number the blessings in transition, it can still be progress when we do the next right thing!
Transitions are the toughest seasons to journey through, whether they come in the form of major life, family or career changes; or in the form of simple transitions like moving offices, returning to work from home, or simply coming back from a trip.
Transitions are fluid, somewhat obscure, and even fragile times. It is precisely because of the fragility, fluidity, and obscurity that they provide the prime opportunities to make great progress, innovative solutions, and propel momentum!
What about you…?
What has or is changing in your work, home, and life right now? Can you see the opportunities for progress?
