SE 7 (Conference)
Last week I spent a few days in Las Vegas. It was the national Sherm conference where just under 19000 H.R. professionals gathered for four days. There were over 200 sessions with speakers from all over the world. The topics ranged from leadership to legal benefits to my favorite culture and so much more. The exhibit hall was humongous with hundreds and hundreds of vendors. I had this thought What if we design our work environments to function like a conference. The fun overwhelming challenging much bigger than any one person. Why not. Welcome to another episode of shaping environments where we stretch an idea. Discovering new dimensions that expands our capacity. I know what you’re thinking. Conferences are a place to get o way from work. But what if we borrowed the framework from conferences and applied them to our work environments. I noticed five strong components that would exponentially increase our effectiveness if we incorporated them at work. First vendors in the exhibit hal l is overcrowded and overflowing with resources. What if where we work centralized every available resource to every single employee. Employees could access those tools however they saw fit regardless of the role. Second sessions like I said there are hundreds of them. What if our learning and development offer options outside of an individual’s specific business area. What if employees could learn about whatever interested them. In this season of their career and us as a company facilitated that education third yellow shirts volunteers wore the yellow shirts. I never had a concern about where I was going or what I was doing. If the app didn’t make sense I would just find someone in a yellow shirt. Coaches and mentors distributed to employees all along their career growth changes everything. Let’s get mentors helping us stay on track. Fourth keynotes this massive gathering is a big town hall. Who from your c suite is talking to everyone in the company offering vision inspiration wit h technology today can happen weekly monthly or quarterly with great ease keynotes fuel optimism top leadership talking to everyone consistently is a differentiator and then the fifth one is networking one of my favorites. Nurturing relationship keeps us healthy whether getting wisdom or having a sounding board or building friendships purposefully helping our people to foster connections be on just their cubes and department is critical for continued growth and development. Let’s help facilitate building relationships for collaboration that matter. Can you imagine if you went to work every day and it was like going to a conference that it’d be exhausting. There’d be lots of energy high expectations curiosity and openness. Simply looking forward to the unknown of what would happen. How much fun is that out of these five vendors sessions volunteers keynotes networking. Which one could you implement this week or month to help you benefit from a conference environment. I’d love for you to share below your thoughts. Of course if you’re already killing it in one or more of these elements please also share too so that those that read the comments can glean from the insights you’ve already gained.
