Spine of Life

Hi Friend

This week has been full of mundane, interesting and challenging experiences. After being here for four months, my office finally has wifi. Believe it or not, getting it to my office was more difficult than expected. The solution could be in jeopardy if someone moves into the office space behind me. The whole process was rather entertaining.

I also landed a new tax accountant and bookkeeper. I’m grateful. The disruption of Hawks Agency is still in motion, while attempting to establish some basic functional elements of business too. Though, changing money people is quite disruptive. On a completely different note, I’ve gotten to run a couple of times this week which has been wonderful.

I’ve been visiting a chiropractor the last two months. He and I have a humorously combative relationship, that I thoroughly enjoy. We’re finally down to once-a-week meetings and my body feels like running again. My pelvis is even. My legs are the same length. My muscles have unclenched. I love those little dancing electrodes they put on my lower back each visit.

Alignment Creates Freedom

Our bodies are magical machines. When aligned, we can do just about anything. When out of alignment we are crippled with limited, painful functionality.

Our brains possess infinite potential to imagine. When aligned with our hearts, dreams can be brought into reality. When misaligned both of them clog up with doubts and fears, that disable forward progress.

Our relationships provide a sense of security and identity. When tracking they produce deep joy, hope and fulfillment. When out-of-sync, murky expectations and questioning confusion can derail our peace.

Our spirits generate aliveness, energy and love. When attuned to purpose… meaning and contentment fuel our existence. When separated from our calling, despair and disappointment drain our life-giving-spark.

What I appreciate about the chiropractor is that he works with what I already have available. All the elements are there to be healthy, vibrant and active. He simply manipulates the pieces and parts that have become unruly. Ironically, my muscles thought by getting involved they would safeguard that part of my body.

LOOSEN UP

It’s fascinating how our body protects itself and in the midst of doing so, also debilitates itself. Have you noticed how some folks, maybe you, maybe me, have tried to “fix” something going on in our lives – which seemed to provide a temporary salve – only to have it create more problems than it resolved?

Humanity is funny that way. We get fixated on one specific thing and tighten all our attention there. When really what we need is to loosen up. What’s hard is, that fixation generates a magnification leading to captivation of our imagination. Then we spiral.

Gratitude and grace enable us to combat our natural tendency to get swallowed up in that cycle.

Instigating Ideas…

1. Consider where you’re aligned and/or misaligned.

2. Do you have a protective habit that’s really a destructive one?

3. Express gratitude to someone.

4. Invite someone to provide some chiropractic services for your soul.

The spine is the defining center point of alignment. It seems all the chiropractor’s efforts are to get my bones, muscles, nerves and other internal pieces to correspond in harmony to keep my spine true.

Do you and I know what the “spine” of our life is? Is there one central component of our reality, that everything else works to support? Do we recognize the connected consequences of joy or pain, in light of our decisions that impact our spine of life?

DEFINE THE SPINE

Now that I’m writing it, I really like the phrase “spine of life”. Whether it’s our faith, our relational roles, our sense of contribution or our defined values, understanding our connectedness to it offers us a perspective for solutions. I went to the chiropractor because of severe pain in my lower back. The cause of that pain was my muscles and nerves, reacting to my out-of-whack pelvis, which had been torqued because of several factors, in its efforts to keep my spine straight.

Maybe the thing we think is the cause of our pain is really just a peripheral subset of us being misaligned with our spine of life?

I hope this week you are healthy and free because of all the gratitude and grace you’re living in. Give yourself a checkup in light of your spine of life and make some adjustments. Small tweaks over time produce big results!
