Transcript for SE 1 (Killers)

This past week I went to The Killers concert at the Oklahoma City Zoo amphitheater. Between the lawn and seeds seven thousand fans are welcome to enjoy the rock and roll talk about an amazing environment. My name is Greg hawks and this is the inaugural episode of shaping environments where we stretch an idea discovering new dimensions that expand. Our capacity. Have you been to a concert lately. What’s the best show you’ve ever seen. I went with my friend David McLoughlin to The Killers concert. He has been to over 700 live shows. You have to know David. He keeps a spreadsheet of new music he listens to and cure rates a Best Of list every year. He also tracks his concerts and guess what. The killers show landed at number two on his all time list. I know what you’re thinking. He must love the killers.
Nope he actually doesn’t even listen to them and only knew like four songs the whole night. On the other hand I love the killers and was singing along all night long.
I got soul but I’m not a soldier.
Oh you mean who we dance.
I’m so sorry that happens sometimes when I’m thinking about the killers. So how does a guy like David who is a connoisseur of music end up writing a concert number two out of 700 when it’s not even a band. That’s one of his favorites. You guessed it the environment. The same holds true for us at work. You might work at a place that you don’t love or use the product that’s created you might work at a place providing a service. You don’t even use. You might work at a place that doesn’t currently tap into your best skills yet that place can still offer an amazing experience for you and other employees. What made the Killers concert so impacting. I’ve got five ideas. Number one quality from the sound to the performance to the production to the stage. Excellence reigned when excellence is a consistent Foundation an environment for us to thrive is available. You and I play a role in perpetuating excellence. Number two brand in the lead singer is a spectacular showman. The dude can lead a crowd. Leadership matters connecting hearts and minds to what we are doing is essential. I’m not saying blame the boss when things aren’t healthy. I’m saying you and I can reach for that level of leadership. With whatever instrument we are currently playing. Number three was music man. The common language of emotion and experience that unites strangers. We were all singing along except David to every tune. Yet each song had a different memory and meeting meaning for us in the audience. The capacity to tell a story that doesn’t force us to connect with it but it connects with us that fosters harmony and a common focus. How are we framing up goals responsibilities difficulties and the future that elicits an emotional connection no for the physical space was an outdoor amphitheater. It offered freedom to jump up and down and bump into people. Whether it’s an office open concept or a cube land or lots of offices. The key to a healthy work environment is freedom bumping into people regularly is essential for collaboration and innovation. How are we fostering that openness.
And number five the unexpected has the night rocked on the clouds rolled in and with 20 plus minutes left.
Everything started getting wet. The downpour started to happen which exponentially increased the amazing factor of the concert. You’d think getting drenched would diminish the experience. Quite the contrary. Somehow this unwanted unexpected rain added tremendously. There will always be unexpected unwanted were hits often disguised as negative though it’s what possesses the X factor that transforms into a spectacular experience leading to memorable moments and memorable moments are the building blocks of tradition lore and culture snapshots. Here your workplace might not feel like rock and roll. It might feel like business as usual and you and I might not be rock stars but we have the ability to shape our environments. Being mindful of these five principles by the way David’s number one concert was Brian Wilson’s 2004 smile tour. My name is Greg Hawkes. We shape environments where everyone gets to contribute their best daily. Thanks for letting us serve you.
