Hi Friend
What an amazing week! It started out Sunday night having dinner with my great friend David at Chicken Foot. Monday morning, I had breakfast with the Freels, who are the reason I moved to Oklahoma almost 34 years ago. (They also let us use their backyard to get married last month). Monday night was movie night with my regular dates Steve & Lillie (& Paulette came too). Tuesday I ran with Joe.
Wednesday was our Culture Shot, which totally failed. Then became something spectacular. Thursday I got to speak in Tulsa to the National YMCA CHRO gathering. They were fabulous. Thursday night I got to serve in Kids Church one final time. Friday, I got to spend time with my daughter getting her car fixed, having dinner, then one final Braum’s ice cream run.
OH GOSH, I almost forgot, also on Friday a couple young guys came and packed up a 16′ box truck. Then I spent every other waking moment packing the “little stuff.” It kicked my butt (& back).
I’m writing you, this Saturday morning standing at my kitchen counter. Hoping to hop in that truck as soon as we’re done talking here, so I can drive 785 miles to finally be with my wife permanently! Needless to say, I’ll keep this brief.
NO KNOCKS
Another thing I fit in this week was selling stuff on FB Marketplace. I’d never really done that before. My daughter suggested it. I found the magic price for everything is $25. I listed 10 items, sold 7. EVERY SINGLE PERSON that bought, when they came to my house texted me “I’m here.” They parked in my driveway and had to come inside my house to get their stuff, but they would not get out of their car until I walked out and waved at them.
It makes me laugh. My kids would do the same thing. I kept thinking though “you have to come inside my house, why don’t you just come knock on the door?”
Our Culture Shot was about Change – a powerful one hour video recording – heck here’s the link, you’ll see. The simplest societal change like that, has a lot of undertones reflecting the demise of human connection. I know, I know, that’s a bit extreme, but that’s how it felt to me.
I see it through my ownership mindset of course, and I was like “why are you making me responsible for you coming inside my house? Come knock on the door and I’ll let you in.” It’s a role reversal, that serves neither of us well.
It could also be, I’m old. Three of my neighbors who, two are much older than me and one the same age, came to my house and knock, knock, knocked on heaven’s door. #GenerationalDifferences
WILL SMITH IS RIGHT
Have you seen the clip of Will Smith talking about “90% done is halfway there?” I felt that on this move. When we think we’re almost there… we still have a long way to go. It’s my new favorite phrase and philosophy. The idea of what it takes to go from almost great to actually great, is a lot more than going from good to better.
Here’s the clip. You can stop reading this and go watch that five-minute clip. It’s really insightful.
Instigating Ideas…
1. Make extra effort to be with people you love!
2. Do more of #1.
Ok, I’ve gotta hop in the shower and get on the road. When you’re reading this, I will be asleep in Minneapolis. I may sleep all day Sunday. Oh never mind, I’ve gotta unload a truck. Ugghhh
The adventure is just beginning…
I sure appreciate you and value our connection. Even if it is just words on a screen, and we don’t interact ever, you allotting time and mental energy to be here with me matters. THANK YOU.
You are welcome to knock on my physical or digital door, any time! Please do…
